Forward head posture has become very prevalent in today’s culture, and from a younger age than ever. Our clients are staring down at screens for hours on end, sitting at a desk or driving for long periods with heads forward of the shoulders. Not to mention the dreaded response from clients when we ask about their work situation: "Sitting on the couch, working on a my laptop", the pandemic-inspired working from home favorite.
The result of a forward head posture, clients are suffering from more frequent headaches, TOS (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome), upper/lower back and cervical pain, fatigue, digestive and respiratory issues, and having greater difficultly focusing on tasks. Down the line, this posture often leads to more complex conditions that may require intensive therapies, more invasive and expensive treatments.
While clients may not yet connect posture with pain, and other health conditions, until they seek our help. As massage therapists, we are in a unique position to help our community understand and directly experience these connections, to develop postural awareness, and, most importantly, bring them out of pain and discomfort and provide them self-help techniques.
