Active Isolated Stretching for the Lower Extremities
April 6 @ 9:00 am - 2:30 pm$125
CEU: 5 hands-on
Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is a dynamic technique that stretches muscles, tendons, and fascia specific to anatomical planes of movement. It remodels the body using gentle, rhythmic movements that avoid triggering the myotactic reflex, which causes a contraction in the tissues being stretched. Utilizing the principles developed by Aaron Mattes, this unique stretching modality restores joint mobility, reduces muscular/fascial tension, changes neurology and improves circulation. The simple yet profound difference is to avoid triggering the myotactic reflex. Repeated, active muscle contractions along with gentle stretches create a venous/lymphatic pump, decreasing inflammation and combating disease. Dysfunctional movement patterns are exposed. Using pain-free movements, the tissues are retrained and balance is restored to the joint.
In this basic level class, you will identify the physiology behind AIS and how it can be applied to promote recovery from injury and support the natural healing process in the body. Evaluate range and quality of movement before and after stretching. Learn how to utilize the techniques to treat yourself and your clients. The material presented covers a wide variety of disorders in the lower extremities such as plantar fasciitis, heel spurs neuromas, hammered toes, and bunions. Course content is geared towards massage and physical therapists as well as other healthcare and fitness professionals.
This class completes one of the requirements for gaining basic AIS level certification with AIS Northwest.

Joshua Morton is a 1994 graduate of Seattle Massage School. Since beginning his practice Joshua has worked in the area of soft tissue rehabilitation and injury prevention. In 2003 Joshua became familiar with Active Isolated Stretching (AIS). He began to employ this technique with excellent results and before long devoted all of his practice to advancing his knowledge of and ability to use AIS. In 2003 Joshua went to Sarasota FL to work with Aaron Mattes; the creator and developer of AIS, for the first time. Since then Joshua has accumulated over 2400 hours working one on one with Aaron Mattes. The time was spent learning advanced methods of soft tissue rehabilitation. This education focused not only on stretching but also strengthening. That experience has given Joshua the knowledge required to address difficult neurological, orthopedic and muscular problems such as scoliosis, neuropathy, joint replacements, muscle spasm, asthma, multiple sclerosis, impingement syndromes and many other diseases that were previously beyond his scope of understanding and abilities to help.
Joshua’s devotion to and expertise with AIS places him among Aaron’s top therapists and teachers nationwide. Joshua’s hard work has earned him accolades from Aaron for having the high level of ability to teach and deliver Active Isolated Stretching and Strengthening. Joshua’s skill as a teacher has created the opportunity for him to teach throughout the states and internationally. He has also authored 2 books on Active Isolated Stretching: one for the practitioner and one for the patient.
In 2011 Joshua discovered Manual Ligament Therapy (MLT) and achieved a Master’s Accreditation level through Arik Gohl, the creator of MLT, in 2012. He currently co-teaches classes around the country with Arik by combining two powerful modalities into one seamless treatment protocol. The combination of these techniques offers a profoundly heightened experience for patients. Muscular, neurological and orthopedic problems resolve significantly faster with this gentle, effective treatment addition.
